Shigeru Miyamoto is a happy fella. And who can blame him? The Nintendo gaming topdog is finally seeing his dream of a 3D Mario game coming true, with news from the Game Developers Conference that a title is in the works for 3DS, Nintendo’s latest handheld that launches on March 27th.
And whoop-de-doo, the latest instalment from our favourite lardy Italian is being developed by the team behind the Mario Galaxy games for Wii. Good news for plumber fans – but it doesn’t stop there.
Nope, because speaking in his keynote address to the GDC, Nintendo President, Satoru Iwata also revealed a tie-up with AT&T to give 3DS users free wi-fi hotspot access, a cheeky Netflix service to get movie trailers in 3D, and, best of all, plenty of ways to bring your existing handheld games onto your new baby.
The Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console will give you access to not only Game Boy and Game Boy Color games, but also a cheeky range of titles from Game Gear and TurboGrafx-16 systems. And in keeping with our insatiable lust for adding dimensions to everything, “3D Classics” will introduce select classic video games remastered in 3D.
All very nice, but there is one thing that truly made me smile. The lovely Mr Iwata also promised a solution for Nintendo DSi / XL owners to transfer their DSiWare games to their new 3DS. That’s a class move, Mr Nintendo – a rare bit of non rip-off gaming that the pikesters at Sony could take notice of for the launch of their Playstation phone.
Still, I got to be honest and say I’m unlikely to get one – 3DS will be a kids toy, and it’s guaranteed that the good titles will be drowned in a flood of 3D horse grooming and crappy multidimensional brain training. But Iwata, i still like your style, so I’ll admit this much:
I’m tempted.
ive heard some good things about the 3ds when people actually get to experience it. not sure if its enought to pre order for 196 or wait till ocarina of time is out. though i’d be gutted if it goes above 200 for a long time due to short supply. hmmm. theres still time to decide, though when it would arrive who knows, but the price on amazon might be worth snapping
I’ve heard some negative comments about the 3d effect after the initial novelty wears off, but overall people seem to think it’s a solid machine if a little underwhelming.
But according to Kotaku, SSF4 is the game to get with it. The characters look pretty decent and they’ve at least acknowledged the less-than-friendly button set up by using touch screen buttons for ultras and stuff. Admitedly, that could be weird to time but at least they put in the option. The downers I’ve seen are no Japanese speech option and static characters in the backgrounds which looks weird, but overall nothing too bad as long as it plays well. I just hope the d-pad or analogue stick is up to the job! Not that i’m getting one any time soon, but oh well!
