Not exactly Skynet, but still…

Sometimes I wonder where I even was during the 90s… I’ve heard about Netlink since, but I don’t remember it at all from the time. Did it come out in the UK?

Brucie’s The Price Is Grig!

20140128-003917.jpg

Nice to see you! To see you…? Groon!

So, I gotta admit that this kiddy on eBay does indeed have a mighty fine collection going on over here. Individually, I would love to own all of these suckers. All together, well, it’s mighty fine, as I think we’ve established.

But can you guess what this punk is asking for this little bundle?! Well, here’s the entry (live as I write) – but before you go a-looking, have a wee guess in the comments deelie first…

Master System madness!

All this Master System reflecting japery has lead me to reacquaint myself with a bizarre yet reasonably cool occurrence in the world of the 8-bit Sega behemoth.

So while all the world was opening their doors wide and inviting Mr NES in to their home, offering him a handsome cuppa and cracking open their finest hobnobs, Mr Master System was left a little out in the cold. Sure, it did ok, particularly in Europe, but it never had quite the same impact commercially worldwide as Nintendo’s offering, the comparably limited software library reflecting this.

That was unless you lived in Brazil.

For indeed, ’twas quite the welcoming that the aforementioned country rolled out for the Master System where it was bizarrely absolutely huge and ran for many more years than anywhere else in the world, seeing off the advent of 16-bit machines as if they were nothing more than flies buzzing around its glorious crown.

Tec Toy, the company that brought Segas machine to the Brazilian masses, certainly weren’t ones to rest on their laurels. Pushing the Master System hard, they translated games such as Phantasy Star and rejigged games such as Wonder Boy for their target crowd. In fact, such was the Master Systems popularity there were even seventy-odd Brazil exclusive titles that cropped up to keep owners going. This included… wait for it… their own Master System conversion of Street Fighter 2!

Yep, the game which back in the early 90’s when asked if it would ever come to the Master System, was met with raucous hysterics as magazines up and down the nation declared to those foolish enough to have ventured the question, ‘it will never come out!’. Officially licenced too. Shame the rest of the world never got it. Dang.

SFII-MS

What’s even more incredible, is that it actually doesn’t look that bad! Yeah, its scatty as heck, collision detection seems nonexistent and the music is not the best representation of the originals even for the Master System, but still. Certainly a heck of a lot better than the C64, Spectrum and Gameboy ports anyway, even if the backdrops are as barren as E.Hondas fridge. Rarer than a good Coldplay song… actually, not quite as rare as that… chances of picking up a copy are not good. Rats! I’ll just have to stick with arcade perfection then. Sigh…

Streets of You-what-now?!

20140126-173305.jpg

What the frick?! Did you know Streets of Rage was on the Master System?!

I’ll accompany that question with these comments:

1. You probably did. In fact, Jimnuts has probably even got this copy of MMS.

2. Even as I type this, I’m getting a déjà vu that I’ve asked this before. But hey, any excuse to post a picture of Blaze in all her 8-bit pixelated glory.

3. My memory’s actually so bad I can’t even remember if I had a Master System. I have memories of playing it in my front room that I’m pretty sure relate to the time we raced diki’s one against my Game Gear. But then I also seem to remember that a Master System was part of what I traded in with the guy in the Camera Exchange when I got my Mega Drive. Especially as – weren’t those manuals we fobbed him off with all Master System ones?!

Anyway, that’s only part of the Streets of Rage related surprise. The other bit being that it was lame… Though as the review suggests, maybe it just beat that little Master System CPU a bit too hard…

Well, now we’ve torn it.

tumblr_mcxqddtbIj1qh9o2do1_500
Yeah, you know this little thread of “I get an idea in my head that I want a game and then I can’t let it go…”

Well, I’ve been on ebay again and this time it’s a Mega-CD. I mean, the funny thing is that a trawl through eBay actually kind of leaves you with the very clear feeling of “man, there was a lot of bulllllllll-crap on the Mega-CD”. But nothing – not Jaguar XJ220, not Cobra Command, not the million copies of Thunderhawk that people still label as rare – can undermine the simple beauty of the Mega-CD. She’s just such… a beast! (Mark 1 that is…)

Honestly, this is the best advert i’ve ever seen for it because looking at it is all you really need to do. Don’t mention the games, the price, the basic underpowering. Just make people look at it and… drool.

Metroid Mystery

20140125-071403.jpg

Y’know, I don’t remember ever playing any of the Metroid series. Seems weird to have missed out the whole of such a big franchise – especially when there wasn’t a huge range of such big names back in the SNES days. I seem to remember being vaguely put off by associations to the NES version – Zelda and Mario pulled it off as they looked all new, but this still looked a bit grubby. You played it much?

But then, I was reading a thing about the games that defined certain consoles (quite good actually, I’ll have to post it somewhen). I’d played nearly all of the Saturn and Dreamcast ones, but hardly any of the Megadrive ones. What’s that all about?!

Talk about a Mega Jet

Howdy doody Grig McTrudy! Whatever the grig that means… Here’s one you’re gonna like. For we venture forth this fine day to reflect on a topic of great interplanetary importance that through this sick world in which we live has taken on a niche insignificance. Well no more my Grigglings! For I can no longer stand by idle as this matter goes unheeded by the greater masses! What is this matter of such unbridled importance? I’ll tell you!

Jet from Gladiators as the Games Mistress. Yes that’s right.

Jet 2

Now, back in the early 90’s as TV executives prodded at this growing gaming occurrence with interest wondering what they could wring out of it in the televisual realms of glory, a few shows cropped up with the latest gaming news and challenges. The predominant heavy hitter that was Games Master was a decent crack of the whip and often roped in respected EMAP reviewers such as Jaz Rignal and Rich Leadbetter to cast their eyes over the newest titles and educate the great unwashed with brief reviews, before Games Master then sullied their good work by getting the likes of Future Publishing ‘personality’ Dave Perry to provide commentary for their competitive challenges. It was alright, and was (and sadly potentially still is) the best gaming show around.

By contrast, CITV’s Bad Influence was a complete shambling mockery of a program hosted by Violet Berlin who at times nearly verged on knowing what she was talking about, and Andy Crane who often feigned playing a game by picking up a pad and writhing in some excitable frenzy while haplessly tapping away at any and all buttons in such an unconvincing manner that even young children of the day could see through his video gaming cluelessness. Although terrible, it did have sparks of rare worth coming in the odd snippet of fleeting accidental coverage of something interesting like footage of Flashback or Sega Rally.

But I digress. For while we were enjoying the likes of Patrick Moore masquerading as a cybernetic resource centre for video game cheats, over on Sky’s Games World, we were missing out on something a grig of a lot more intriguing.

Diane Youdale, real name Jet from Gladiators, was the talk of every young fellow of the day while we watched in amazement as her spandex-clad likes squeezed the life from her foes while hanging from hoops on a Saturday night in her Gladiatorial combat colosseum, or Wembley Arena for you common folk. Not stopping in her captivation of the nation, Jet then saw fit to turn her hand to the realm of gamery, just in case any bedroom dwelling youngster had managed to avoid her Saturday night heroics. Thus, whether cast upon a sofa, or taking a dip in the pool, the ‘Games Mistress’ was ever on hand to recite the latest tips and cheats. Basically, she was the female equivalent of Moores Games Master character, and designed to appeal to every teenager in the land. It’s a very simple equation that the makers of their respective shows realised: Moores male character is obviously going to be a cool robot with impressive circuitry and futuristic tech filling the screen, while Jets female character, is just as obviously going to be a game-playing hottie, thus giving false hope to every young male in the land that Jet would care about their latest high score. Talk about knowing your target audience!

Jet Gladiators

The thing that we want to know is, can Jet still tell us the level construction kit cheat from Sonic? And more importantly, would she be willing to make a stunning return to the fold as our resident cheat specialist here in Grig Towers? The pay sucks, pension is terrible, and the lavatorial facilities substandard at best. But hey, at least the job would be easy these days. Want to know how to unlock all your favourite characters in the latest beat ’em up? How to get every car in the newest driving simulator?  How to do pretty much anything in games these days that once upon a time would have been accessible via the medium of investing time to acquire skill by playing the game to access the extra content as a reward? Simple. In 2014, it’s called DLC and you pay for it!

And now the other side of the Nintendo story…

20140124-174143.jpg

Encapsulated in this game – Nintendo World Championships on the NES – is the other side of the Nintendo story. People won’t pay a few hundred for a Wii U, but they will pay thousands for a bashed up copy of a game that’s over 20 years old – which says to me that Nintendo’s history is more valuable than its present…

According to the BBC, this trashy cart is selling on eBay for over £3,000 – I couldn’t find it myself so they could be making it up just like the whole “people actually like Eastenders” line they’ve been peddling for the last few decades. The little punk was released for a competition in 1990 and has mini versions of Tetris, Mario and Rad Racer on it (so it’s actually not bad value… Ahem…)

It does sound like the sort of thing collectors go crazy for of course – anything rare is gold dust and only 116 of these were released – but it still stands out that you can’t imagine new Nintendo titles coming close. I’ll probably be proved wrong – especially as the Wii U itself is already rare enough (haha) – but that’s the feel you get right now, eh?

Sadly for us, it also probably shows that, as this generation of gamers gets older and starts to earn proper money, all this retro stuff will only get more expensive. People buy up their childhood, and no one who actually played these back in the 90s would have had the money to hoarde em til the last decade. Now they’re all adults, they’re snapping em up. So basically the chances of me ever getting my own copy of Snatcher are getting thinner by the minute. Sniff.

Nintend-woe. Good one. Not.

You may have noticed there’s been a lot of buh about Nintendo’s troubles recently what with the underwhelming performance of the Wii U and the falling short of expected targets of the 3DS, even though it was the biggest selling console last year. From Nintendo president Iwata having to state that he will fix the companies flagging fortunes and refuse to stand down from his position, to having to stomach $1.2 billion knocked off the company value, it seems that everyone is looking to stick the boot in on Segas old foe. And while many are suggesting Nintendo do a Sega and bow out of the hardware race and release Mario and his fellow stable-mate games on Xbox and PS, I’m actually starting to find Nintendo all the more appealing. Whether it’s the rooting for the underdog and the thrill of the fight for survival that I enjoy, and once endured with Sega before the inevitable happened, or the fact that they actually have some games I actually wouldn’t mind having a go at, I’m definitely drawn to 3DS and Wii U. Not that I can afford either, but if I had money, I’d definitely get them. Sigh. Anyway, here are a few games that have caught my eye for Wii U.

Super Mario 3D World: Let’s get the obvious ones out the way first, shall we? Mario has been the default go to character to give them critical acclaim for a long time now, and this Wii U offering is no different. Throwing four player shenanigans in to the mix with the selectable cast of Super Mario 2 on offer, there’s no sniffing at a new Mario game. Plus, it’s the plumbers first HD offering. Scoring massive (and admittedly standard and usually slightly exaggerated because its Mario) review marks across the board. How could you say no?

gaming-super-mario-3d-world-screenshot-1

Zelda Wind Waker HD: Another default entry. While not a new game per se, perhaps Ninty got caught a li’l short and needed a Zelda ASAP to push out the door. Whatever the reason, Wind Waker was a cool addition to the Zelda family, so to have this HD’d up is worth a look. Couldn’t see myself replaying the whole thing again, but you don’t know when you’re gonna get sucked in to a game, so never say never! Worth shelf space if nothing else.

windwaker

Mario Kart: Yep. I’m not surprising anyone here am I? I didn’t think I’d bat an eyelid at a new Mario Kart. I mean how many times can you play the same game over and over? But the trailer pleasantly surprised me with all the ideas and driving up walls and multiple surface capers. It’s obviously still gonna be worse than the original, but looks good nonetheless. Just please take out those freakin’ blue shells, please!

WiiU_MarioKart8_scrn01_E3

X: Developed by the same guy who bought us Xenogears, Xenosaga, and more recently the highly sought after Wii game, Xenoblade Chronicles, (the obviously Xeno-something) X is coming exclusively to Wii U. It’s looking mighty fine too, with vast landscapes and huge beasts roaming the world to duel with, there is bound to be much excellent JRPG flavoured butt-kickery on offer here. My spider-sense is going nuts over this one so I’m hoping for a fine game! With the pedigree of titles the developers have had a hand in, I trust I won’t be disappointed. And if I am, then we might just have to unlock the Grig Orig dungeon and let that buffoon of an old mascot, The Grig, free of his tether to wreak havoc on the dev team. And that’s something no one wants to happen.

original

Bayonetta 2: This was obviously a big story upon announcement, as the Nintendo funded project is going to be a Wii U exclusive, locking out most of the people who supported the original. The furore was intense, but at the end of the day, if Nintendo are paying for it, there’s not much anyone can do about it as it wouldn’t have been made without their money. Could be very good with some promising looking set pieces that look just as manic and bizarre as its predecessor, albeit more grandiose in scale. Just put a cheat (or more likely in this day and age, a paid DLC) to have her with her old design coz the new short-haired look sucks. In my humble opinion of course… nay, fact! Anyway, let’s hope it’s a goodun!

WiiU_Bayonetta2_scrn10_E3resized

Well, thats a few of my personal preferences. Course, the Wii U has got it’s work cut out for it, despite the ten million or so sales that will follow the publication of this article, such is the power of Grig. But alas, Nintendo recently reduced its sales predictions from 9 million to 2 million, which is a heck of a drop. The thing is it’s kinda understandable at this point.

I was in a games shop recently and witnessed something that would seem quite representative of the current Wii U situation – there were a couple browsing the Wii games when the lady of the pair picked up a blue box and asked her accompanying gentleman, ‘What’s a Wii U?’. Primed to fill her in on the specifics, said gentleman merely shrugged his shoulders and replied ‘Dunno.’, before continuing their merry excursion in no doubt uneducated generic software browsery. And that’s exactly one of their main problems – people don’t know what Wii U is, if they even know it exists at all. I recently had to inform a PS4 owning friend, usually quite clued up on gaming, that there was a new Wii console. He asked when its coming out. I told him that it came out in 2012. He looked confused. This could be a good area for Nintendo to start.

But whatever. Personally, I’m gonna forget about flagging sales, and that they should have called it Wii 2, and not even worry about the massively underpowered chip architecture within said beast. Instead, I’m gonna embrace the potential death cries of this wounded behemoth and hope for the best, coz if they’re anything like Sega, some of their finest work could start cropping up now they’re trying so desperately to keep afloat, a la the Dreamcast.

Now I just need to get some grigging money to buy this stuff…

Power Stone?

20140120-064328.jpg

Apparently this little bad boy with multi-player, furniture throwing action was a Capcom arcade port to Dreamcast. I vaguely remember a game with furniture throwing, but don’t remember this. Anyone?
