Dibbs Ahoy reporting for duty!

The Grig is back? Well then I’d better stand up to bat!

Well, I think one of the first things I’ll do is have a li’l meander through the current gaming news and give the Griggish touch to the latest hot topics doing the rounds. Only joking! I’m gonna talk about Street Fighter! And we’ll start the proceedings with a run down on what’s gonna be swinging our way this year with the inbound Ultra Street Fighter IV!

Now if there’s one thing they say, it’s that time’s a healer. That person however, was talking out of their ayne as Capcom think sufficient time has passed to heal the wounds of the outright atrocity that was Street Fighter X Tekken and are looking to recoup a li’l lost revenue on that horse-mess of an investment. We’ll see. The Grig aint in no habit of handing out pardons for crimes of that magnitude even if it was nearly two years ago now.

But pray tell, how are Capcom going to take back this evasive profit? Why, by using any and all assets they created for the aforementioned title and shoehorn them into Street Fighter IV of course – relevant or not! This means that Ryu and Ken will be duking it out on a space station and in a Jurrasic research facility to mention just two of five recycled backdrops they’re including. What the…? Oh well, at least the Mad Gear Hideout backdrop actually makes sense.

Of more interest are the new roster additions of Hugo, Poison, Elena, Rolento, and an as yet unannounced female from the Street Fighter universe. Whether she’ll be another rehash like the Cammy-based Bison dolls we’ll have to see.

But what else is new, I hear you cry. Ok, ok, I’ll tell you!

Red focus attack

The focus attack has become an integral part of SFIV and has opened up many different new options moving the gameplay in interesting directions, FADC being a particularly fun toy for expanding combo potential and looking very cool.

Red focus expands on this. Your character now glistens with a red sheen – briefly enough to not remind you of a red gem activation from X Tekken – and can absorb hits up to the double digits, which sounds kinda excessive, but we’ll have to wait and see how this all pans out in practise. The pay off is that this burns two bars of meter. Let’s also hope it doesn’t also burn SFIV’s very picky fan base, the jury for whom, are still out on this one.

Delayed wake up

Integrated as a means by which you can toy with your foe and giving vortex characters something else to think about by changing the speed at which your character gets up after a knockdown. Basically its gonna help not being immediately pressurised with follow up attacks and help avoid getting trapped in constant attack patterns. This is going to particularly change the game for the likes of Ibuki who applies pressure as a character is rising with her Kuni-cross over shenanigans. Gonna be interesting. Probably.

Double Ultra

You can now head into battle with both Ultras under your belt. This potentially intriguing development is however, not quite as fearsome as you might think, as the selection of both Ultras give you toned down results with far less damage output than if you were to just be using one. It’s hard to say how this increased damage scaling will work on a peculiar Ultra like Juris Feng Shui Engine, but I guess we’ll find out shortly.

Other changes are the obligatory rebalancing of the returning roster, shoring things up so that characters are on a more even keel with one another. This never really actually happens but at least they’re trying. Demo’d at numerous worldwide play tests, Capcom are beavering away on implementing feedback to get the balance just right, although the occasional oddity is still cropping up – Juris jump back divekick removal for example… er, why? Now I can’t do my useless low divekicks based off of back jumps that were no threat anyway. Strange ahoy! Presumably the two or so programmers making this game and taking the eternity to do what one modder could do in about a month needed to hit that one up with the nerf-bat! Grigging A…

Anyhoo, launching in June on disc and a SSFIV DLC (filthy word, excuse my language), while it might be dripping with Capcoms hallmark recycled minimum effort…. am I gonna get it? Grig yeah! Xbox and PS3!

And it was STILL better than a 32X

You ever seen this before? SEGA made a personal organiser… And from the look of the ad, it was around the Megadrive era. Weird – I’ve never even heard this mentioned before…

Have you played Device 6?

20140111-112838.jpg

One of the few iOS games that I’d genuinely recommend is worth seeing. Stuff like angry birds and other simple things made for it are ok, rehashes of console titles like street fighter and call of duty are mostly lame because they’re impossible to play, and then there’s this: something made better because it’s on iOS. Using its features like touch and swipe as a plus, and really not mattering it’s on a small screen – quite a rare trick.
Do you know any others that are this good?

What happened to those other people who were doing streaming gaming?

20140108-204817.jpgHere’s how they make it interesting – stream it via 4G to portables. PS3 games on my iPhone? (With some kind of pad case of course…) that is literally the only way I’d care about it…

some article about Sony doing Playstation Now

Get Filezilla to preview images in Windows Photo Viewer without inheriting default programs from windows

Woah, didn’t I just write a post, and now another one, ok people here’s what’s going down. Usually on say a windows 7 machine, when you open an image it opens up in Windows Photo Viewer, if you’ve installed other graphics programs it may open in that if you have set it to when installing. But if like me you like to open images in a lightweight program to view as quickly as possible then you have unchecked those boxes on installing new software.

Now what happens when you want a ftp program like FileZilla to view images on your server with this program? The simple answer is to check the box by inherit from windows, but what if you don’t like that option because other files will open in their default!

I like php, html and aspx files to view in notepad++ or even plain old notepad when checking what the version the server has, and so I want to specify what programs my files open in when usually I like them to open in Visual Studio or DreamWeaver for code completion.

I’m getting to the point now, Windows Photo Viewer doesn’t have an exe for FileZilla to point to and do this, it has a dll and it can be run from the command line with rundll32. As far as I know you can’t get FileZilla to play nice with the commands to open in the Photo Viewer. So here’s a simple windows console application that will be an exe for FileZilla to point to and be happy.

You’ll have to create this yourself as I don’t like the idea of someone downloading an exe they don’t know or trust, and you shouldn’t. but if you see the code and compile it you will know it is safe ^_^

Right, I’m using visual Studio, you can get a free visual c# express if you don’t have the luxury of a work or student license for the full product.

Create new console application and in Program.cs at the top with the using statements add using System.Diagnostics;
now change the main function static void Main(string[] args) to look like the following code

static void Main(string[] args)
{

    if (args.Length > 0)
    {
        if (args[0].ToString().EndsWith(".jpg") || args[0].ToString().EndsWith(".png") || args[0].ToString().EndsWith(".gif") || args[0].ToString().EndsWith(".tif"))
        {
            ProcessStartInfo startInfo = new ProcessStartInfo("cmd", "/c" + "rundll32 \"C:\\Program Files\\Windows Photo Viewer\\PhotoViewer.dll\" ImageView_Fullscreen " + args[0].ToString());

            // this should hide the cmd window right after loading image
            startInfo.UseShellExecute = false;
            startInfo.CreateNoWindow = true;

            //create a process
            Process proc = new Process();
            //assign it our startinfo er info
            proc.StartInfo = startInfo;
            //and start the bad boy
            proc.Start();
        }
        else
        {
            //keep the console window open to show helpful message
            Console.WriteLine("Was expecting an image file type of jpg, png, gif, tif");
            Console.WriteLine("Press any key to exit.");
            Console.ReadKey();
        }
    }
    else
    {
        //keep the console window open to show helpful message
        Console.WriteLine("Was expecting an argument of an image file with type jpg, png, gif, tif");
        Console.WriteLine("Press any key to exit.");
        Console.ReadKey();
    }
}

This checks for image files passed to it and opens up a new process with cmd rundll32 and the image viewer. Make sure the Windows Photo Viewer path is the same for you by navigating in windows explorer. run it, debug it whatever, then take the exe file from the “/bin/Debug/” directory and put it somewhere you can use FileZilla to reference. If a file of the right type isn’t passed to out console application we write a message to console and then ask the console to read input from the user, this is so the window waits to display a helpful message.

Now in Filezilla, go to edit > settings and under “file editing” check Use filetype associations if available. Then in filetype associations > “custom filetype associations” type jpg “” and now FileZilla will run that exe with the image filename in its temporary location for our app to load the Windows Photo Viewer with Huzzah.

Was this worth it? probably not, but such is life hehe

Change of format

Hey there GRiG fans, there’s a change of format happening soon, we’re adding manga and anime to the roster ^_^.

As you may well know, there is no shortage of tech and video game blogs, and over the past couple of years we’ve all been busy with life stuff and sadly we have neglected the pages of the GRiGORiG. Some of us got proper jobs, and others of us had adorable baby girls, relocation’s’ and change of employment. Anyone who’s tried blogging knows that a lot of time can go into researching and writing even the smallest post, and before yo know it, what counts as your relaxing evening is gone.

So in an attempt to breath new life into the GRiG, I will start adding very short posts about tech, programming, video games, manga and anime.
