Sega spies trouble ahead

There is news today that the storm clouds are gathering again over yet another former gaming behemoth. Sega-Sammy are reporting to investors that profits will be down considerably on prior estimates for the close of this financial year, which could be a sign of impending trouble.

Typical. Just as we were in the market for a new favourite company after Capcom had finally ground our Grig for the last time with their evil tomfoolery. Anyway…

The reason Sega is pinning on their crumbling empire is the ol’ ‘challenging economic climate’ chestnut, which has seemingly been waiting at the gates for them after school to give a swift kicking to their consumer business operating costs, resulting in large losses.

‘But what will all this mean?!’ I hear you cry. Well, the results as they stand will see Sega looking to ‘streamline’ the way they run their business, clamping down on operational expenses, restructuring their current employee hierarchy, and other such nonsensical David Brent-like boohockey.

What it really means, is that they’re gonna cancel games, churn out more rubbish, and sack people.

To this end, we’ll see Sega focussing on their big-name franchises that they have ravaged of any last shred of quality but deem to be high earners and so will continue to vomit out – specifically Sonic The Hedgehog, Football Manager, Total War and Aliens.

Yeah, apparently Sega made an Aliens game. Must be that one everyone slated earlier this gen. Oh, and Colonial Marines of course, if thats even real. Duke Nukem Forever is looking nostalgic and waving. Anyway…

Well, at a time where the only video game news seems to be bad news, this is hardly something new. Sega have been on the brink of destruction before, and probably would’ve rolled over and died if it wasn’t for the millions of its deceased former owner pulling them back from oblivion. But who can save them now?

Well Sega, you’ve come to the right place. If its a saving of superhero-like proportions you’re after, you’ll be glad to know I’ve put my Sonic-themed thermal Y-fronts over the outside of my trousers and I’m limbering up for some heroism in the form of some razor-sharp business advice! Listen up!

First things first, we suggest selling a few IP’s. Let someone else have a punt at Shinobi. We’ll have no more destroying of old classics, and even if it was awful, it would still be better than your more recent efforts. And I’d certainly be willing to chip in a few dabloons if Bomber Games were to go after the Streets of Rage rights. Again, lets face it – if they make an actual SoR4, it’ll be better than anything that will come from in-house at Sega. Next, release Shenmue 1+2 on XBLA as have reportedly been finished. What’s up with the wait, huh? We ain’t getting no younger! Well, unless we were to have a dip in the fountain of youth here on the Isle of Grig… but The Grig did a floater in it last time I checked so we tend to give it a miss. Tssk! And lastly, for the sake of my sanity… release Nights on Live and PSN!

Now admittedly, this is just a wish list of what I want more than a realistically solid business plan, but it’s food for thought… SO DINE ON IT!

‘Till next time… pip pip!

Fez gets April 13th XBLA release

Wait a cotton picking minute, the Grig has new posts barely a day apart, what gives? Fez release date thats what, 800 Microsoft points on the unusual release day of a friday, eh? Those crazy indie devs just don’t know how to fall in line, hehe.

Fez is a very 8 bit like retro graphicly game, with gameplay that is primarily a platform side scroller which can turn around the environment in 4 steps until you are back on the view you were at, giving the player a hint to the perspective to which the game character Gomez can jump the platforms which in a 3d space wouldnt be inline but from a side on view is, and that is what counts. if that makes sense. You know what,i pucture paints a thousand words, and if you string 25 of them along per second and give the illusion of movement, then that’s even better. here goes, embeding from vimeo

Grig News – Sainsburys sale, Gootecks, PS4!

Oh woe betide thy once pure shores that lapped the Isle of Grig! For indeed, news of video-gamery has swelled once again to bursting point and it’s time for the Grig to start siphoning out the updates worthy of our readerships attention! There’s no Minecraft stuff mind you, so if that’s why you’re here, you best just move along.

Just me left then? Sigh….

Sainsburys deals ahoy!

Since Street Fighter X Tekken turned out to be a huge let down that was more about Capcom trying to rip off its fanbase than it was about making a good game, we have sauntered on to pastures anew. Now there’s only so much Draw Something a man can take, and even more so shuttling 8-bit style stereotypes up and down my meagre 50 odd floors in Tiny Tower (Yeah, I said ‘new pastures’, not ‘good pastures’. See what Capcom have done to me?!). But apparently, in the past two years of only playing SSFIV, there were actually other games on real consoles that came out. Many of these were able to be attained in the recent Game fire sale for a pittance which stocked me up nicely for avoiding going out through the summer. But what of more recent titles, I hear you cry. Well looks like Sainsburys is looking to get in on the action with a few gleaming stones of their own!
Here’s a rundown of the dealery currently on offer:

– PlayStation 3 console: £164.99
– 3DS console: £124.99
– FIFA 12: £26.99
– Mario and Sonic at the London Olympics Wii: £20.99
– Assassin’s Creed: Revelations: £17.99
– Final Fantasy 13-2: £14.99
– Just Dance 3: £14.99
– Mario Kart 7: £27.99
– Super Mario 3DS Land: £27.99
– Mario and Sonic at the London Olympics 3DS: £27.99
– Black Eyed Peas Experience: £12.99

(by the way, you should note that a lot of these seemed to be for 360, except obviously the Nintendo stuff, at least in the store I went to, though that could’ve been an error)

Interesting. There’s certainly… er… a game in there. Probably. So yeah, it’s kind of a poor batch, but personally as a big Final Fantasy fan, it’s kinda hard to sniff at 15 mooltags for XIII-2. And while many have shunned the series and couldn’t care less, I will remind anyone with even a passing interest that Japan-based Famitsu gave it 40/40, so could be one for like minded anime fans among you!

Gootecks quits Cross Counter

Any Street Fighter dudes among you will probably already be wiping a tear over today’s news that one of the most renowned FGC figureheads has walked away from the very thing he himself had a huge hand in creating.

For those of you who dont know, Gootecks and his compadre Mike Ross were the stars of many an online show. From taking SSFIV and MvC3 online in hilarious manner in Excellent/Marvellous adventures, to interviewing top players on Cross Counter Live, to hosting great community events such as Bar Fights. The chemistry between the two was always great, always a great laugh, and the shows brought a lot of people in to a scene that they didn’t even know existed. It’s certainly worth going through the old shows if you’re new to what they do!

Capcom sure have a lot to be thankful to these guys for as their efforts certainly grew the community and earned the aforementioned company a pretty penny, even if everything Capcom have done since has been a disgrace.

So, whatever the reasons are, and there are plenty of conspirators already rooting through every detail trying to get to the bottom of it, all we will do here at Grig is doff our hats and say, ‘Thank you sir. Jolly good show. You did indeed, keep it classy.’

That would’ve worked better if he mained Dudley. ‘Soul Spiral’? Nothing you can do with it….

PS4

Rounding off today’s proceedings is a little item about a release that’s likely to slip under the gaming radar called the PS4. Or is it? For indeed, sources today have been relaying info left right and centre declaring in unison that said machine is trying to sneak into bars and get served with ID stating the name ‘Orbis’.

Now whatever this mother will be called, and let’s face it, it’s going to likely be PS4, the info today gave a bit more food for thought than just its title. Obviously the specs doing the rounds show beastly horse power and insane resolutions, but there was also something extra. Namely, as revealed on Kotaku, the machine ‘won’t offer backwards compatibility, will feature anti-used games measures’.

Now this is not the first time we’ve heard mutterings of such nature. A few weeks ago similar stories were doing the rounds about the new Xbox, even though such a thing was deemed unlikely in reality. But could Sony just be bold enough? Certainly the preowned online pass shenanigans already rearing its ugly head this gen would likely come in to play more than a complete lockout, but who knows? Blu-Ray and digital versions have been touted, and given the current direction, this seems a likely outcome, but talk of games being essentially secured to one account is an interesting one to chew over. Still, the days of being able to take a game to your mates is practically gone now anyway with all the DLC schemery going on. Ho hum!

If there’s one thing the dwindling days of the current crop has taught me, it’s to expect the worst, coz if it’s bad for our wallets and minutely better for a games company, it’s probably true. I’ve already resigned myself to not being part of whatever the industry is cooking up for the next leap based off of what’s already going on today, but never say never. But for the sake of our fans (fan? Anyone?), we wait. Just without much hope.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to see if the Vegan food shops been restocked in Tiny Tower. Yeah, video games 2012 FTW.

XBLA has a NEXT thing, and it has Minecraft in it

XBOX Arcade Next promotion screenSo Microsoft like to do these little XBLA release schedule promotion things for decent profile games, and call it a name like “Summer of Arcade” or in the case of this spring, “Arcade NEXT”. Starting April 18th with the Trials Evolution, certain XBLA titles will be released every wednesday and sporting the new 400 gamerscore point limit. The Arcade NEXT promotion runs through to May 9th when dun da da daaaa Minecraft XBOX 360 Edition is finally released giving us the perfect opertunity to mine that diamond without cheating on a server and then copying files into the single player loaded up with diamond pickaxe and armour. Locking down the experience is exactly what i wanted, and 400 XBOX Achievmos thrown in to the mix is a bargain, though the 1600 MS points is perhaps not, but we all know that won’t stop us.

The rest of the line up is Bloodforge April 25 for 1200 MS points, Fable Heroes May 2nd for 800 MS points, and the Trials Evolution that kicks it all of is 1200 MS points.

Who’s that standing in the Reign?

In more positive news today, Famitsu are reporting Segas Platinum Games are crowbarring a familiar face into the roster of their rather spiffing looking futuristic action brawler, Anarchy Reigns. A rather popular character sporting guns on her feet and hair for clothes. You got it yet? For indeed, uber popular witchy chick Bayonetta is due to join the cast… as a Japanese preorder DLC character. Uh oh.

Now let’s not get ahead of ourselves here. We’ll obviously get her over here in the West at some point, but with Sega due to comment on the game later this week, we’ll save judgement until we’ve got more to be going on.

But just do you know Sega, we have pitchforks, and we’re not afraid to use them. You’ve been warned.

This is without question a cool addition to the game, but after Capcoms recent DLC behaviour, colour us a little cautious at this point in time. Still, we can’t deny the games looking good, and with ol’ Platters at the helm, we trust things are in good hands. Don’t let us down!

SFxTekken isn’t done annoying you yet

So how are you? We all good? Gone back to SSFIV AE 2012 yet? Good. Just wanted to make sure that we were all on the same page before we talk about YET MORE bad news for Street Fighter X Tekken, coz unbelievably, we’ve got a little epilogue in the sorry saga of the aforementioned game just to close this woeful chapter.

Lets cut to the chase with the latest confirmation: there will be no Xbox patch to add the ‘pair play’ feature.

Despite vague references about speaking on the Xbox problems that many hoped were hints at the highly pushed feature actually being patched in to the game, nothing ever came. Until now! For indeed, straight from the horses mouth, Svensson took to his Unity mount to face the million dollar question and commenteth thus:

Q: When is the local online pair play for the Xbox 360 version of Street Fighter X Tekken coming? I hope Capcom has found the time to patch in a feature that was a big selling point. — Jesse

Svensson: There is no patch planned for this issue.

Blunt. And that’s not rhyming slang. At this point, the disgrace is beyond any possible reason to think that Capcom will ever do anything decent ever again. This response is certainly expected.

So where does that leave us? I’ll tell you where: with a full priced new game at a generational point where others are squeezing more juice out of the machines than anyone thought possible, but where Capcoms effort has broken sound, broken gameplay, broken gem selection with a coming broken fix, broken online, broken match making, broken modes, broken DLC plan, and even worse, broken promises.

Evidently Capcom have better things to be pouring their efforts into at this junction. Banning users who have been talking on Capcom Unity about this fiasco, for example. Real friend of the fans you are, Capcom.

Obviously, as consumers, we’re clearly stupid and as Capcom say, don’t understand that annoying everyone, making them wait for months to make finished content available, and ripping us off = keeping the game fresh. Personally I’m still waiting for the magical revelation to occur that Svensson said would make everything make sense and get us all onside that was supposed to happen as they spoke more about the game, coz funnily enough, it’s all the things listed that’s killed the game off for me just a few weeks in, but ho hum! I’m sure Capcom are right! Perhaps in a parallel universe or something.

Walk away, everyone. Do not under any circumstances buy the disc locked content or support this company in any capacity.

We’ll remember this Capcom – the Grig never forgets! You’re officially on our list along with EA!

Saving up for Mars

We here at the Grig, sometimes stray from the path of video games or tech, and head more towards the science, though sometime this does involve tech.

In the beginning of this blog, it was a way to share cool things, check the tag line top right, so here’s what i’m gonna do, i’m going to point you to a bcc article about some Nasa guy who reckons in 25 years, a trip to mars and back can cost you the average person, half a million dollars, around £315250, easy, just save £1,050 a month and you’re set. Might i suggest living at your parents and eating nothing but “Mug Shots” for dinner, or pot noodle if you’re into that kinda putrid stale taste.

Grig news: Mass Effect 3, SFxTekken, Game

And so the gaming apocalypse continues. Today we have a butchers at some of the more intriguing news titbits that are meandering about the halls of cassa de Internet like loitering drunkards outside a brewery. The theme of the day, and in fact most of the last couple of weeks, seems to be sadness, rage, revenge, and fan revolt. Sounds like we’ve got all the parts that add up to a fascinating equation – time for a bit of Grig-anomitry!

Backlash abound!

Now, if there’s one thing Capcom can be relieved about in the wake of being brutally exposed as scum recently, it’s that there was an even bigger giant lining up to be felled that released the same day as SFxTekken, and which absorbed even more of the fan-rage intensified heat! Mass Effect 3. Yeah, that’s right. The Grig ain’t scared to wade in on a war no matter how unprepared we are, having not played it and all. Besides, it’s by EA which rules the prospect of purchase out automatically. But with a good two hours under our belts on the pre-EA infected Mass Effect 1 (one hour on our first go… and the other replaying from the start again coz we got bored and restarted months later. And then stopped again.), could there be any fellows more suited to comment on such a news piece?!

Now its likely not escaped your attention that the Internet has been ablaze with people unhappy with the day one DLC schemery of EA. But the issue grinding the fans grig even more, seems to be the ending of ME3. And by jove, they’ve certainly been voicing their opinions! In fact, the sheer wealth of people in threads worldwide have been so numerous that they’ve even eclipsed the amount of people leaving messages calling them ‘whiny’, and in Internet terms, when you outnumber people complaining about complaining, you know somethings really up. Indeed, the fans were rampant as they let people know far and wide how let down they’d felt after three lengthly games. Yeah, we’d seen backlashes like this before, but never of this magnitude. However, in a rather spiffing twist, people who signed a petition requesting a new ending also raised $30,000 for charity in donations. Good show gentlemen!
And the results? Well, for all you furious Mass debaters out there, all your protesting may actually get you what you’re after!

A statement made over the weekend detailing how no new ending would see the light of day has been taken down and instead, Bioware have given the following statement on its Facebook page that gives angry punters a glimmer of hope.

“We are aware that there are concerns about a recent post from this account regarding the ending of the game. In this post it was stated that at this time we do not have plans to change the ending. We would like to clarify that we are actively and seriously taking all player feedback into consideration and have ruled nothing out. At this time we are still collecting and considering your feedback and have not made a decision regarding requests to change the ending. Your feedback and opinions are of the utmost importance to us. We apologize for any confusion this has caused. Our top priority regarding this discussion is to keep communication with you, our loyal fans, open and productive.”

Interesting. Smells a little like the grinding gears of pedals in reverse to me. However, bowing to pressure or not, all in all, it sounds positive for the fans hoping for more. And at least Bioware are doing something to appease their fan base, unlike current-gen super-villain Capcom. Speaking of which…

PKE readings are off the chart! This kind of slime can only be Capcom!

Not wanting to give Capcom or their terrible practices much more thought, it has at least been entertaining watching people begin to take the hacked 12 ‘new’ SFxTekken characters online, much to Capcoms displeasure. In fact, it displeased them so much that Capcom put their best man on the case, Christian Svensson! He took to Capcom-Unity to begin his investigation and fielded questions about the extent of Capcoms knowledge regarding the use of the 12 disc encased captives!

“Yes, we’re seeing news of this. Quite ballsy for folks to be taking hacked Xbox 360s on Live where they are detectable.”

Ballsy indeed. Nearly as ballsy as a company wronging and outraging an entire fanbase with greedy business practices creating one of the biggest backlashes in the history of games. Anyway…

“In any event, we already have opened channels of communication with Microsoft on these issues Friday night. If you can capture screens or video of this in action (as some have already) we’re working on bans for boxes and accounts with Microsoft for haxxors.”

Well, at least their collaborating with Microsoft on something at last. What will Sony think?! I guess a couple of extra characters while they’re at it is a little too much to hope for. Anyhoo…

So in order to catch these vagabonds of injustice, Capcom are relying… on the people who they’ve screwed over? Rather hilarious really considering a brief glance over a few threads on Capcom Unity are unanimous in their conclusions that Capcom are getting what they deserve. And needless to say, Detective Inspector Svensson didn’t quite get the support that he was perhaps looking for as he exasperatedly locked the thread meant for the grassing up of the online folk that dared to expose Capcoms money-grubbing scheme, concluding with the line “We’ll catch them ourselves.”
Its funny how people aren’t willing to help, isn’t it Capcom? Maybe its because YOU are the bad guys? Still, I bet the hackers are quaking in their boots (except they’re not).

Game over?

So to conclude today’s news of nuggetry-like helpings, it seems like the axe is well and truly hanging over Game’s head after a rescue package for the troubled outfit was rejected. Obviously, this is something that’s been on the cards for a while, but recent reports seem to suggest that the chain is now on the absolute verge of collapse. From stories of having insufficient credit to buy in stock, to rumours of buyers having come and gone, to even resorting to a fire sale (that actually could have been better), it’s certainly been a torrid time for them. Alas, these troubles have amassed to the point where all attempts to steady the ship now appear to all be in vain and the end of the line is really here.

Whatever you think of Game, it’s gonna be weird having the chain gone. It certainly served me well over the years, if at times only as a refuge from having to be dragged in to Top Shop and the like. I cant say i was a big customer, or even, a customer, as it’s true that they were brutally uncompetitive. But for all the gripes against them, it was at least a bit more inviting than Gamestation with its entourage of Kerrang toting till ‘dudes’ and barrages of indiscernible music affronting my eardrums, even if the prices were equally as bad. Sure, they’ve had bad business practices over the years, but what’s really gonna suck is that people are gonna lose their jobs. And if there’s one thing for sure, when it comes to finding work, this is not a good time to have to be looking.

The End

And to finish? Well, as the final nail in the coffin of woe, and to top it all off, if there were any more proof that we are in the darkest of days of gaming, we are sorry to report the following: FIFA Street is at No 1 in the charts.

The end is nigh? Nay! The end is here!

Are video games art?

We pose the question because this week saw both the BAFTA video game awards, and the opening of the The Art of Video Games exhibition at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Lets start off with a hearty congratulations to our favourite Sweed, Markus @notch Persson who picked up the Game Special Award at the Baftas. We aslo congratulate British Developers at Rocksteady Studios for the latest Batman instillment, Arkham City, which Won 2 awards, one in the Action category and one in Performer for Mark Hamill’s role as The Joker, which is well deserved for the Star Wars 2nd favourite hero, assuming we agree Hans Solo is the cool hero of course.

Portal 2 was the big winner, unsurprisingly as it was an enormously satisfying sequel with fun logic puzzles, humour and great story telling. Funnily enough it picked up Bafta’s for Best Game, Best Design and Best Story.

Rayman Origins also picked up a cheecky best Artistic Achievement Award. So well done to all, for the full list see http://www.bafta.org/games/awards/nominees-winners-2012,2892,BA.html.

Now on to the Smithsonian, apparently there are 3 parts to the Art of Video Games exhibition, the first is where you listen to the designers, the second where you can play from a selection of 5 games which is essentially showcasing the building blocks of game mechanics, story telling and other aspects that games have since built upon. The exhibit is on from March 16th – September 30th. Some of the classic title on display are pacman, zelda, super mario, pitfall, and many more.

The debate as to wether video games are art depends on who you are, some find that 8 bit graphics are art, take Minecraft for instance, and recreated megaman in blocks is like pixel art, and the fact its built in a 3d world is pretty funky. Then there’s the upcoming retro city rampage, which envoles a feeling of nostalgia for old nes, games, i could consider that art too. Moving into hi res games, some of the graphics are breathtaking, sometimes almost real, and sometimes just a beautiful creation. Games like limbo have that noir look to it and is definitely an artistic view. But of course with games, there is more to the art than just the imagery, theres the story, and the gameplay mechanics all of which can be an artform. Portals puzzles are well thought out and constructed, again an artform.

So if games aren’t art, what are they?
