Etymology Makes Me Feeeeeeel Good

20140531-225216-82336141.jpg

Well, does it get more awesome? Of course, we already knew Ghostbusters was a hotbed of catchphrase creativity. “You’ve… you’ve earned it.” “That’s a big Twinkie” “No, you are being moved off campus.”

You know, all the classics.

But who knew that our busting pals weren’t just making jokes from the language, they were making the language?! That’s right ectoplasm-fans, because remember the phrase “This chick is TOAST”? Well, that sucker – saying someone is toast when they’re about to get the beating – was invented right here, in good old 1984, by Ramis, Ackroyd and Murray. Imagine it – no one had ever suggested someone was toast before Venkman decided to proton pack the heck out of Gozer. And now ALL the kids are telling people they’re toast. Hell, I told 27 people they were toast just yesterday.

Yes, they showed that prehistoric bitch how they do things downtown, and created a whole new proleptic construction in the process. It’s even in the Oxford English Dictionary. And that’s from OXFORD.

Kudos, gentlemen. Kudos.

Meanwhile, In Tech News…

New CoD split screen mode invented. Perfect timing for Sunday, when there will be some CoD action. Course, someone may need to remind me that I don’t need a cardboard head-roof when playing at home alone. But damn it I still want one!

Whaaaaat?!? I can’t believe it’s even been ten years since the FIRST episode of friends, and yet somehow it’s been 10 years since the LAST?!?! Is that even possible?!?

Sonic’s Overweight Cousin

20140528-070826-25706233.jpg

Now here’s an interesting one. Of course, we all remember Rocket Knight Adventures, and that it was a quality title. But I don’t remember it as being a stone cold classic (because actually, I can’t even remember what it’s like to play – just that it’s good. you had it right jimmy numb-ers?) And I actually kinda remember thinking it was a bit of a B-title – sure, very good, worthy member of the collection, but not a flagship brand. Not something to rave about.

Partly that’s as it looks like someone started with a brief to make another Sonic, got a bit desperate and drew a fat armadillo. And partly just as everything outside Sonic and Mario tended to fall into the Bubsy the Bobcat category – playable, but not classic. Rayman, Ristar, Crash Bandicoot – all playable games, but all a bit Pepsi to Sonic’s Coke. Secondary. Lesser. Filler.

All of which makes the comments on this here advert quite surprising. Because sure, journos exaggerate to get quoted – but these are some high falootin’ compliments, and no mistake. Certainly makes me wonder if this was really A-list. Ahead of those other also-rans, certainly. And definitely, makes me wanna play this sucker big time.

But priorities… Get a new Megadrive first. Then this. Project!

Aiwa-nt One Of Those…

20140527-150848-54528190.jpg

So another SEGA machine-mystery rumbled into town this week when my ongoing eBay hunt for a Mega CD turned up this little number – a hi-fi that the seller claims is a combination boom box/ megadrive and Mega CD.

Um…

At first, my spidey-senses called hoax as this geeza has clearly plugged a knock-off Megadrive pad into a cassette player. No dice amigo! Just because you’re asking £1500 dibbers for it , doesn’t mean I believe it’s anything more than a crappy hi-fi…

But then I saw the seller had good feedback, and had posted a load of detail – including a product ID. And lo! Google has a whole raft of similar pictures and this lowly pile of AIWA buh does indeed play the mighty Snatcher!

Who’d have thunk it?

Still. You’d have to be a) a mega fan and b) utterly minted to consider parting with 1500 clams to own this ugly sonofabitch. Especially as my google search revealed they’re prone to breaking down all over the shop… Nope – class mark 1 for me, please. Now I just need to find one for cheap…

Minecraft comes to Vita and others in August

Mojang have pretty much announced that XBOX One, PS4 and Vita version of their massively popular sandbox game is coming in August. Better yet the Vita version can swap saves with the p3, it’s also part of that buy on one own on both shindigs. If you already own a current gen console version of Minecraft then for a year you can upgrade to that consoles successor version for $4.99 otherwise pricing is $19.99 as with Vita. We’ll assume near the £15 mark over in the griggin blighty. You can also transfer your saves from lower to higher gen but not back again.

This is all very exciting, not a fan of the mobile version I’ve still wanted a full version whilst mobile, and the vita is perfect, and like I say, the save file can go to the ps3 and continue from their, marvelous.

Meanwhile, in Japan.

Just posting this as a message back to Good Historical Us-es – don’t worry that you thought you were good at Street Fighter and then got whupped by some Guile-sonc-boom-throwing Chinese dude on the Pier. It can happen to anyone. Because think of those young girls learning every step of some Kylie song on Dance Dance Revolution and thinking they’re the nuts – and then seeing this…

Dreams are broken. But winners are made. And kudos – this dude rocks.

Prime Doesn’t Cover America…

console
Just read this beaut of an article about the origins of Nintendo. Some stuff you may have known before – about how it started in the 1800s (only just… 1889. But still… old ahoy), as a company selling playing cards, and how it shipped over to the USA in the 1980s. But loads of other bits – like how Mario Bros ripped off an arcade game called Joust, how Nintendo nearly folded in the early 80’s, and a few random tit-bits about the people running it. Pretty fascinating stuff – and well written too, which goes to prove how the GRiG is re-shaping the world of video games journalism. Ahem.

Anyhoo, it’s from a book that’s actually about both Nintendo and Sega, which makes it doubly tasty. So tasty in fact that I went straight to Amazon to buy that sucker (well played to the marketing guru who had the idea of publishing this teaser article to lure in saps like me…) Sadly, the book’s only out in America (comes out here in August) and the postage was, like, £30. But lo! I had some free Prime offer thing so – woohoo – free postage from America ahoy!

A video of Joust, yesterday. Using the iframe code ahoy!

Except, I’ve kind of ruined this story with the title of the article. As, yes, Amazon are wily enough not to let you use a UK Prime membership to order stuff for free from thousands of miles away. But I do now have 30 days free so if you want anything purchasing… let me know.

And instead, I’ve bought the book on Kindle, which means it’s out in a couple of weeks. I’ll let you know how it goes… And ps, apparently they’re making it into a film – hence the fact the book has a foreword by Seth Rogen. Interesting…

Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment heading to EU Vitas

sword-art-online

So get this right, there’s an anime/manga/light novel that focuses on characters who play an online MMORPG with the use of an emmersive headset that intercepts any movement and puts it into the game rather than their physical bodies. Except in this game they can’t leave, if outsiders force the headset off they die, if their in game characters die they also die in the real world.

All this is exciting stuff, but we’re pretty sure the RPG game coming to Vita this summer won’t have this feature and you’ll be able to put the vita down to eat your pop tart before continuing on.

Trapped in the game they all aim to beat the 100 levels so they can escape, people are there so long they form little communities pick a trade to live from.

The good news is the trailer for the already released Japanese version shows many characters from the anime and Asuna does look hot, the word is there will be a focus on the relationships which is one of the best parts of Sword Art Online, Kirito plays the reclusive level upper and main protagonist whilst Asuna is the little cutie love interest.

Sword Art Online for the vita is developed by Banpresto and published by BANDAI NAMCO Games with a July 2014 release according to the website http://www.bandainamcogames.co.uk/product/sword-art-online-hollow-fragment/ps-vita#tab-description

To Be This Good Takes…

sega-682_1330171a

So some mention of Sega UFO Catchers in another post had me looking at the internet to see what they made. When I found the video below. Just… so sad. I mean, they’ve always done that stuff I guess. But compare the two…
